Scaling Up Nutrition Movement Coordinator and Assistant UN Secretary-General visits Mozambique
MAPUTO – The Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement Coordinator and Assistant UN Secretary-General Ms. Gerda Verburg met with the Government of Mozambique and other nutrition stakeholders today to discuss progress towards the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals, including zero hunger and malnutrition in the country. Ms. Verburg is currently visiting SUN Countries in Southern and Eastern Africa to discuss how to scale up efforts that ensure good nutrition for all in the sub-region, making sure no one is left behind.
I believe in the commitment of the Government of Mozambique to end hunger and ensure good nutrition for all.
In 2011, the Republic of Mozambique joined the SUN Movement, a unique and voluntary effort, founded on the principle that everyone should enjoy the right to good nutrition. Today, the Movement includes 59 countries, three Indian States, and more than 3,000 organizations from civil society, business, donors, and UN system agencies, in support of government-led multi-sectoral and multi-stakeholder efforts to tackle malnutrition.
Ms. Verburg is serving as Coordinator of the SUN Movement since her appointment by former Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, in August 2016. She commends the multi-sectoral approach of Mozambique in the fight against malnutrition and the leadership of the Ministry of Agriculture in hosting the multi-stakeholder platform as a coordination mechanism under the Technical Secretariat for Food and Nutrition Security (SETSAN).
“I assure you of His Excellency the President's commitment to ending malnutrition in Mozambique. We are ready to dynamise Mozambique's capacity to fight hunger”, affirmed Mr. José Pacheco, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security of Mozambique.
In her opening remarks, Ms. Verburg stressed that the year of 2017 brings manifold opportunities to transform compromise into action. In Mozambique, unprecedented efforts engendered real change, but a lot still has to be done. "I believe in the commitment of the Government of Mozambique to end hunger and ensure good nutrition for all as part of the efforts of the country to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, making sure no one is left behind”.
The mission is organized by the Government of Mozambique in conjunction with the UN System. Ms. Verburg looks forward to continue her mission tomorrow where she will have the opportunity to meet with high-profile champions for nutrition in the country, including the First Lady, famed musicians, Ministers of Government and religious leaders who are using their voice to disseminate messages to improve nutrition for a stronger, healthier and more prosperous nation.
Ms. Gerda Verburg is the coordinator of the SUN movement and UN assistant secretary general. She was elected member of the house of representatives and later on Minister of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Behind Ms. Verburg stands a long carrier serving the United Nations, including chairing the Commission on Sustainable Development. Since 2011, she is the permanent representative of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the United Nations Agencies based in Rome (FAO, WFP and IFAD).
